Find the right help for the question in front of you

Houston’s city area overlaps Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Waller Counties. A Houston city label alone does not identify the county for a particular property. Confirm the parcel’s county before using a county clerk, tax-office, or court link below.

These resources help you find the right office for a recorded deed, tax account, probate question, or court notice. If you are also deciding how to sell, we can review the property as-is and discuss a cash offer.

Local records and offices

Houston-area county resources: what each office handles

Choose the county for the property first. Tax offices handle tax-account and collection questions; county clerk links are for recorded property documents; court links give the court or probate route. Use the case record or current notice when a court matter is involved.

Harris County

Harris County Clerk — Real Property Records

Harris County · recorded real-property documents and deed inquiries

Use this route for recorded property documents and deed-record questions. It is separate from the county tax-account route and from a probate-court case.

Harris County Probate Courts

Harris County · probate-court directory and case routing

Use the official directory to find probate-court information. Check the actual case record for the assigned court; the property address alone does not establish a court assignment.

Fort Bend County

Montgomery County

Montgomery County Probate Court Number One

Montgomery County · probate-court information

The county page identifies Probate Court Number One and links to probate information. Use the actual case record to confirm the court and routing for a specific matter.

Montgomery County Tax Office

Montgomery County · property-tax accounts and collection information

Use the Tax Office for local property-tax account and collection questions. Ask about the account for the specific property.

Waller County

Waller County Clerk — Real Property Records

Waller County · recorded property documents

Use the County Clerk for real-property record questions, including recorded deeds. This record route is separate from the county tax account and court-case routes.

Waller County Court at Law No. 2 / Constitutional County Court

Waller County · local probate-court routing

The county court page gives local probate-routing information. Check the current case record and confirm the right route with the Clerk before acting.

A Texas sale rule

No real-estate transfer tax on a full-ownership sale

Texas has no state, county, or city real-estate transfer tax on a sale that conveys full ownership. The Texas Constitution bars a law imposing a transfer tax on that kind of sale. A deed still has to be signed before a notary and recorded with the county clerk. Recording fees are based on pages, not the sale price, and a deed without the buyer’s mailing address can cost more.

Ask the title or closing professional to confirm the deed and current recording charges before filing. When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs. Your mortgage, liens, back taxes and share of current property taxes are separate.

Houston home seller resource questions

Which county office should I use for a Houston property?

The City of Houston overlaps Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Waller Counties. The city name alone does not identify the county for a particular property. Check the parcel’s county, then use that county’s records, tax, or court links above.

Where do I check property taxes or a delinquent tax-sale notice?

Use the Tax Office or Tax Assessor-Collector for the county where the property is located. The county links above separate Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Waller tax-account routes; Harris and Waller also link to tax-sale information.

Where do I look for a deed or recorded property document?

Use the County Clerk real-property or recording link for the property’s county. A recorded deed search is different from a tax-account question or a court case; use the court and case information on the notice for a court matter.

Where do I start with probate or an inherited house?

Use the probate or county-court links for the property’s county to find the official routing, then confirm the correct court with the actual case record. The county directories do not assign a court to a particular property by address alone.

Does Texas charge a real-estate transfer tax when I sell?

Texas has no state, county, or city real-estate transfer tax on a sale that conveys full ownership. The deed still must be signed before a notary and recorded with the county clerk. When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs. Your mortgage, liens, back taxes and share of current property taxes are separate.
