Johnson County Treasurer

Johnson County · property-tax accounts, collections, and tax-sale information

Contact the Treasurer about a property-tax account, unpaid taxes, collections, or a tax-sale notice. This is the tax-account route, not the office for recorded deeds or court judgments.

Johnson County Recorder

Johnson County · land transactions, property-ownership records, and recorded documents

Use the Recorder for deed and other recorded land-document searches. A recorded-document search is not a title opinion and does not by itself settle who can sign a sale.

Helpful Iowa rules

Facts to check before a house sale

Start with the rule that matches your question, then ask the closing professional or Iowa Department of Revenue about the actual transaction or estate.

Iowa real estate transfer tax

Iowa charges 80 cents for each $500, or fraction of $500, of the sale price above the first $500. For a taxable transfer, the county recorder will not record the deed until the applicable tax is paid. The person conveying the property is legally liable, normally the seller, and some transfers are exempt; ask the closing professional to confirm the taxable amount and whether an exemption applies.

When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs, including Iowa real estate transfer tax. That does not pay your mortgage, liens, back taxes, or your share of current property taxes.

Iowa inheritance tax depends on the date of death

Iowa inheritance tax does not apply to deaths on or after January 1, 2025. If you are sorting out an older estate, use the date of death when checking the Iowa Department of Revenue guidance for the estate.
