Find the right help

Start with the property address and the question in front of you

Incorporated Auburn is in Lee County, but a mailing city name or ZIP code alone does not establish whether a particular address is inside city limits or which parcel record applies. Search the address in the City of Auburn COA Map and compare it with the County’s property-tax map before choosing a city or county contact.

Useful offices

Lee County offices for property records, taxes, and probate

Property appraisal, unpaid property taxes, deed recording, and court matters are separate tasks. Use the contact that matches the record or notice, and confirm address-specific instructions with the office.

Lee County Revenue Commissioner — real-property appraisal

Lee County · assessed values, real-property appraisal, and parcel maps

Start here for an assessed-value or real-property appraisal question. The County’s parcel maps can help you locate the property. An assessment is not a sale-price estimate, and no value for a specific parcel is determined on this page.

Lee County Revenue Commissioner — property-tax collections

Lee County · property-tax accounts, delinquent-tax notices, and tax sales

Use the County’s collections route for an unpaid property-tax balance, notice, or tax-sale question. Ask about the actual parcel or account; the links do not establish a particular balance, exemption, deadline, or sale status.

Lee County Probate Judge — Recording

Lee County · recording and public access to permanent documents, primarily real-estate records

Use Recording for the County’s deed-recording route and recorded land-document questions. Recording is different from property appraisal, tax collections, or a court’s case docket; confirm current filing instructions with the County.

Alabama rule to check

Check the taxable value used for Alabama deed tax

Alabama charges deed tax when a deed is recorded with the county probate judge. The rate is 50 cents for each $500 of taxable value, or any part of $500. A mortgage or seller's lien may reduce taxable value if Alabama mortgage tax has been paid on it; ask the closing attorney to confirm whether that deduction applies and how much.

The deed must include proof of the actual price or value. Without proof, the probate office uses the latest tax assessment, and penalties can apply. Ask the closing attorney what price evidence and recording fees apply before the deed is recorded.

When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs, including Alabama's deed tax. Your mortgage, liens, back taxes and share of current property taxes are separate.

Auburn and Lee County resource questions

Which Lee County office handles an assessed value or property map?

Use the Lee County Revenue Commissioner’s real-property and appraisal contacts for assessed-value questions, and its Online Maps for parcel mapping. A county assessment is not a sale-price estimate. For an address-level city-boundary question, use the City of Auburn COA Map as well.

Where do I check unpaid property taxes or a tax-sale notice?

Use the Lee County Revenue Commissioner’s collections contact and delinquent-tax or tax-sale information. Ask about the actual parcel or account; the office links do not establish a balance or sale status for a particular property.

Who handles a deed, estate filing, or court judgment?

Lee County Probate Judge Recording is the route for recording and recorded land documents. Use Lee County Probate Court for probate or estate-court questions. For a civil judgment, start with the court and case number on the judgment or notice; a property-tax office and a land-record search do not decide the court case or its effect on a specific property.

How is Alabama deed tax calculated when a house sells?

Alabama deed tax is 50 cents for each $500 of taxable value, or any part of $500. The closing attorney can confirm the taxable value and whether a qualifying mortgage-tax deduction applies. See the deed-tax section above for the closing-cost wording and the separate balances that remain the seller’s responsibility.
