West Virginia real estate transfer excise taxes
West Virginia charges a real estate transfer excise tax of $1.10 for each $500 or fraction of value. An additional county excise tax starts at $0.55 per $500; a county commission may raise that additional tax to as much as $1.65 per $500. At the base rates the combined tax is $1.65 per $500; a higher county rate increases the amount. The county clerk also collects a $20 Affordable Housing Fund fee before recording. The law assigns payment of the excise tax to the seller unless the buyer accepts the deed without the tax paid.
When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs, including the West Virginia real estate transfer excise tax and the additional county excise tax. No agent commissions when you sell to us. Your mortgage balance, liens, back taxes, and share of current property taxes remain separate.
