Useful offices

Find the office that handles the record

Raleigh’s municipal geography crosses the Wake–Durham county line. Use the exact property address and the record or notice to choose a county route. Property appraisal, tax balances, deeds, estate files, and court judgments are different tasks; a county link is an orientation, not a parcel-specific determination.

Wake County Clerk of Superior Court — Estates

Wake County · estate information route

Use the Estates contact for questions about a Wake County estate record. Estate filings are separate from property appraisal, tax bills, recorded deeds, and civil court judgments.

Estates contact: (919) 792-4450.

Durham County Clerk of Superior Court — Estates

Durham County · estate information route

Use the county Estates route for a Durham County estate question. The court lists its courthouse in Durham; use the estate record and case information to ask about the correct file.

Durham County Register of Deeds

Durham County · deeds, land titles, and real-estate records

Use the Register of Deeds for deeds, land titles, and recorded real-estate documents. That record path is different from a tax account or a court judgment.

Durham County Tax Administration

Durham County · real-property appraisal and tax collection

Use this department for real-property appraisal, property maps or ownership changes, and current or delinquent property-tax questions. Those records are separate from deeds and court judgments.

North Carolina seller fact

Check excise tax on conveyances before the deed is recorded

North Carolina charges an excise tax when a deed transfers real estate: $1 for each $500 of the price or value, and any part of $500 counts as a full $500. That is $200 on a $100,000 sale. State law makes the seller responsible for paying the tax to the county Register of Deeds before the deed is recorded. Some transfers are exempt, including gifts, transfers under a will or by inheritance, and transfers where the buyer pays nothing.

Ask the title or closing professional to confirm the taxable amount and any exemption for your transaction. When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs, including North Carolina's excise tax on conveyances. Your mortgage, liens, back taxes, and share of current property taxes are separate.

Raleigh and county resource questions

Which county office should I contact for a Raleigh property?

Raleigh’s municipal geography crosses Wake and Durham counties. The county office links are orientation only; use the property address and the record or notice to identify the right county route.

Who handles property value and unpaid property taxes?

Wake County Tax Administration handles real-estate appraisal and tax-bill questions in Wake County. Durham County Tax Administration handles real-property appraisal and current or delinquent tax questions in Durham County. An assessed value is not the amount of an unpaid tax bill.

Where do I look for a deed or a court judgment?

Use the county Register of Deeds for a deed or other recorded real-estate document. A court judgment is a court record, so use the county and case information printed on that judgment or notice to find the court contact; do not treat it as a deed record.

Where should I start with an estate or inherited property?

Use the Estates route for the county connected to the estate record. Wake County lists an Estates contact at (919) 792-4450; Durham County publishes a separate Estates page. Use the actual estate record and court information when asking about the file.

How is North Carolina excise tax on conveyances handled?

For a taxable deed transfer, North Carolina charges $1 for each $500 of price or value, or any part of $500. State law makes the seller responsible for paying it to the county Register of Deeds before recording, subject to exemptions. When you sell to us, we pay the closing costs, including North Carolina’s excise tax on conveyances. Your mortgage, liens, back taxes, and share of current property taxes are separate.
